Commercial wool & Lycra, sewn coat, hand screen printed, hood lining of commercial silk over-dyed and discharged. One size. "Portlandia" coat from Saf-T-Pocket Pattern Co.
This coat was one of the pieces shown in the Capilano University 2009 Grad Show of the Textile Arts Department, where I was privileged to show my work along with grads of both the Diploma program and the Advanced certificate program. I was thinking of issues of "high" culture and "low" culture and made what I call an "opera" coat, decorating it with a screen print based on a photo of a pot of refried beans that had been left far too long at room temperature! I found the culture of molds that developped to be fascinatingly beautiful.
