Early this spring we had a visit from two dear friends who work extremely hard on issues of social justice in a very disadvantaged area of Vancouver. They brought us a bouquet of stunning deep purple tulips, and talked very movingly of their recent difficult experiences, both professional and personal. That night, the haiku printed around the border of the piece came to me, and I incorporated it into a gift for them.
